The vote was to decline sending an amendment to the presbyteries that would have replaced “man and woman” with “two people.”
Second, they declined to separate out either of the two overtures that would have resulted in the sending of an Authoritative Interpretation allowing for “pastoral discretion” on the matter. Then they amended item 13NB (which calls for a two year study and reconsideration of the issue in 2014) to use their action on that item to answer all other items in the committee’s report. Finally, they voted (76% to 24%, or 489/152) on the main motion as amended.
All this means that we hit the reset and replay button and do this all again in Detroit in 2014. But for now, the definition of marriage is upheld although many threats/promises of “ecclesiastical disobedience” were promised by pastors who intend to marry same-sex people in states where it is legal to do so.
