Paul Ryan’s Catholicism and the Poor
Acts coerced by government, no matter how beneficial or well-intentioned, cannot be moral.
The bishops dance with the devil when they invite government to use its coercive power on their behalf, and there's no clearer example than the Affordable Care Act. They happily joined their moral authority to the government's legal authority by supporting mandatory health insurance. They should not have been surprised when the government used its reinforced power to require Catholic institutions to pay for insurance plans that cover abortions and birth control.
Where is the Evangelical Protestant counterpart to Catholic Charities?
My early experiences with Protestant churches: There was no passion for the care of the poor.
Let's get the government out of this work, and let's somehow regain the Biblical principles of mercy ministry and let the 250 million evangelical Christians…get our collective acts together and reclaim our rightful responsibilities in mercy ministries.
The Sabbath Day and Confessional Subscription
How do we as Reformed Christians see the role of the Law in the life of the Believer?
If these words in our Confessional standards are legalistic and tend towards Phariseeism then those who find them unbiblical should see that they are removed from our Standards, because if they are not a Biblical summary of the truths of Holy Scripture we shouldn’t confess them
Pat Robertson vs. the Spirit of Adoption
This is not just a statement we ought to disagree with. This is of the devil.
The prosperity and power gospel Robertson has preached fits perfectly well with the kind of counsel he’s giving in recent years. Give China a pass on their murderous policies; we’ve got business interests there. Divorce your weak wife; she can’t do anything for you anymore. Those adopted kids might have brain damage; they’re “weird.”
The Family Research Center shooting and the vocation of a hero
“Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point, which means, at the point of highest reality"
When I worked at FRC (2006-2008) I would have happily swapped jobs with almost any other employee—except for Leo. Having manned many a guard post while in the military, I couldn’t imagine having to do such a boring, repetitive, often-thankless job.
Naughtily Singing “Onward Christian Soldiers”
“Few are nostalgic for a hymn that celebrates Christian soldiers marching to war.”
The new Presbyterian Church USA hymnal will need fewer copies, since the denomination is sadly in membership free fall. But maybe some Presbyterians, hungry for militant hymns, can occasionally visit a Methodist church.
Real Policy vs. Realpolitik
U.S. foreign policy should put ideals over ideas
We also neglect the theological doctrines that once breathed life into our democratic capitalistic system. Consider the incarnation, God born of a woman into political chaos and socioeconomic oppression. The incarnation of Jesus gives us hope in every possible circumstance, but guards us against false hope and utopian promises. I like the way Novak phrases it: "One of the most poignant lessons of the Incarnation is the difficult teaching that one must learn to be humble, think concretely, face facts, train oneself to realism."
InterVarsity could get reprieve at SUNY Buffalo
Student judiciary rules student senate erred in revoking group's official recognition
A student judiciary at the State University of New York at Buffalo has given InterVarsity Christian Fellowship reason to hope it might regain its official status just in time for the start of the school year.
One More River To Cross
You could probably write a whole book just about the Jordan River imagery in hymns.
“Borders” in other words are psychological and spiritual as much as physical, and the Jordan (like many rivers) carries multiple symbolic meanings. To say that “we” live on this side of the river also means that they, those foreigners, those unclean people, live on the other shore, and are nothing to do with us.
Good News for Bad Preachers
Your first few sermons are always terrible, no matter who you are.
Great preachers are the ones who preach really bad sermons. The difference is that they preach really bad sermons when they’re young, and are sharpened for life by critique.
