Proof Of Infant Baptism By Way Of Promise And Precept
If baptism is reserved for members of Christ’s church, then our doctrine of the church will inform us on the question of who is to be baptized.
God commanded 4,000 years ago that the sign of the covenant be placed upon males within the household of professing believers. Although the sign of entrance into the covenant people of God has changed from circumcision to baptism (and can now be received by females), God never rescinded his covenant principle concerning households that were... Sex Ed as the Leading Edge of the Revolution
Churches face crises of authority in this face of the sexual revolution.
At its deepest level, guarding against worldly influences means wrestling back from public schools the authority to educate children in all the deepest questions of human life. This means also in the smallest questions. American public schools are based on the assumption that the public raises children—and only after parents and churches deferred to the... Continue Reading
Theology Levels the Playing Field for Humanity
The creation account gives us our starting point for understanding God, but also ourselves.
Theology levels the playing field; it puts us in our proper perspective and grounds our mission in this world. Because all human begins are made in the image of God, the theological implication is we must treat all human beings with the dignity and respect that is their due in light of this reality. It doesn’t matter... Continue Reading
The Breath of God
From the very beginning, the Holy Spirit has been the executive of the creative activity of God.
The Holy Spirit of God, who first hovered over the waters of creation, spoke through prophets and Apostles, and was poured out at Pentecost as a witness to Christ’s promise of another Paraclete (comforter, sustainer, equipper, counselor). Jesus continues His ministry to His disciples by means of the Spirit as His personal, representative agent. The Spirit’s... Continue Reading
Something to Ponder
The book of Psalms is a real treasure – a refreshing spring for the weary times we all have to endure.
The Psalm begins and ends with the spotlight on the steadfast love of God. The Psalm invites us to consider four examples of people in dire straits who called out to God and discovered why they should thank God for that steadfast love. Perhaps Psalm 107 is the food for thought that we need. The... Continue Reading
Perseverance of the Saints & Shepherding
How does God preserve His saints?
The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps the believer, ever uniting him or her to their Savior. And once united to Christ, there is nothing that can snatch them away. Of course, the Holy Spirit uses means to draw us into deeper communion with Jesus Christ, what are called the Means of Grace –... Continue Reading
Stay Awake | Mark 13:32-37
He warned His disciples not to mistake ordinary tribulations as signs of God’s judgment upon Jerusalem. Instead, in verses 14-23, Jesus gave them the explicit signs of that coming judgment and warned them to flee Jerusalem whenever they saw.
Stay awake implies keeping watch, and keeping watch necessitates being awake. Jesus gave this command because it is the attitude and posture that He expected of His disciples. The great tribulation upon Jerusalem was coming, and they needed to be able to properly discern between true and false signs so that they could escape being caught... Continue Reading
No Christianity without the Church
The way in which the modern evangelical populace in North America regards the church’s corporate identity and the necessity of corporate worship is in dire need of correction.
The church of centuries past had a far more robust and biblical understanding of the church’s corporate self-conception and the need for corporate discipleship and gathering. We can and ought to recapture and promote this past self-conception and ecclesiastically corporate mentality. [Reformation21] Editor’s Note : This post has been adapted from a longer article... The History of Covenant Theology
The covenant theology of the fathers stressed the unity of the covenant of grace, and the superiority of the new covenant over the old.
Throughout the history of the church there has always been a theology of the covenants. The Reformation recovery of the gospel and the biblical distinction between grace and works made it possible for Reformed theology to construct a detailed and fruitful covenant theology. Until recently, it was widely held that covenant theology was created... Continue Reading
Christian Scholarship as an Act of Servanthood
The pulpit is worthy of the highest scholarship.
We live in perilous days. The Church needs your scholarship to support believers making their way through a chaotic world, “a strange land”…where everything they have known is being deconstructed and reassembled without the Creator’s blueprint. Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the... Continue Reading
