At its opening session on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, the 41st General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America elected RE Bruce Terrell as Moderator. The PCA General Assembly is holding its annual meeting in the TD Convention Center in Greenville, S.C., through June 21.
Terrell is a PCA Ruling Elder and Executive Director of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City. He was nominated by TE Tim Keller.
Also nominated was Dr. Frederick (Jay) Neikirk, a ruling elder in Hillcrest Presbyterian Church in Volant, Penn. He was nominated by TE Fred Greco.
Terrell has been serving as Redeemer’s executive director since March 2006. He has served as a ruling elder, both at Intown Community Church in Atlanta, Ga., and Redeemer for more than 22 years.
Terrell, an identical twin, grew up as an “Army brat” living in numerous places throughout the U.S. and Germany. He stated, “I’ve essentially had two different careers. My initial career was in student development at the university level. I have a Masters degree in student personnel and pursued that career path for about 7 years before joining the staff of Mission to the World (MTW), the foreign mission agency of our denomination. I thought it would be a 2-year “stop-out” before pursuing a Ph.D. and continuing with my original plan. Those two years turned into 20 great years with MTW where I served in a variety of positions, the last seven years or so as the chief operating officer.”
Terrell serves on the PCA’s Standing Judicial Commission. He also serves on the board of the Bowery Mission in New York City.
Terrell is married to Missy, a counselor at Redeemer’s Counseling Center. They have two children, Andrew, who is serving with his wife Olivia as MTW missionaries in Madrid; and Missy, a student at University of Georgia.
An interesting factoid about Bruce Terrell: he is still an Atlanta Braves fan after all his years in New York City.
