Stupak was the holdout preventing the passage of the bill pro-life groups strenuously opposed because of its abortion-funding provisions. He negotiated what pro-life groups called a phony executive order from Obama that merely restated the bill’s provisions rather than prohibited abortion funding under it.
Former Congressman Bart Stupak admitted during a panel discussion at the Democratic National Convention that he may have been hoodwinked by pro-abortion President Barack Obama over Obamacare.
Stupak was the holdout preventing the passage of the bill pro-life groups strenuously opposed because of its abortion-funding provisions. He negotiated what pro-life groups called a phony executive order from Obama that merely restated the bill’s provisions rather than prohibited abortion funding under it.
Now, Stupak, in video captured by the conservative blog Red State, admits the new Obama HHS mandate, that forces religious groups to pay for and refer women for abortion-causing drugs, violates Obamacare and the executive order.
“I am perplexed and disappointed that, having negotiated the Executive Order with the President, not only does the HHS mandate violate the Executive Order but it also violates statutory law,” he said.
Tabitha Hale, of the conservative Big Government blog, attended the panel discussion and responded:
“Former Congressman Bart Stupak admits a compromise he made with Barack Obama to pass the Affordable Care Act is invalidated by HHS’s controversial mandate for taxpayer-funded contraception, including abortion-inducing drugs,” she writes. “Today Breeanne Howe of RedState and I attended a Democrats For Life panel during the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. An attendee stood up and asked Bart Stupak and a panel of pro-life if the HHS contraception mandate has put them in a difficult position.”
“Conservatives cautioned that the Executive Order was cheap political cover that could just as easily be undone by the President. It took him a few years, but apparently Stupak has come to that realization as well,” she concluded.
Conservative blogger Breeanne Howe added:
“Following an Executive Order signed by President Obama that supposedly ensured that abortion would not be covered, Stupak declared victory for the pro-life movement. This in spite of the fact that many had said the Executive Order was toothless and would not prevent anything. It seems Mr. Stupak has finally realized this.”
