The sermons that most preachers preach are what I call ‘safe’. They deal with the legitimate and orthodox issues of the heart, but they never cross the boundaries into the realm of the duties and limitations of the civil magistrate.
Obamacare has been declared constitutional by the United States Supreme Court. The Court said it is legal as a tax, rather than being legal under the Commerce Clause of the Constitution. Chief Justice John Roberts, a conservative appointed by Bush, tipped the scales in favor of Obamacare.
I am surprised that the political conservatives were stunned by this decision. The Federal Government has been in both the retirement and health care business since FDR. Social Security and Medicare are mandatory taxes for both retirement and health care, unless you have opted ut as an ordained minister. In reality, the American worker has been living with a tax for mandatory health care insurance for decades. The reception of your health care benefits are normally delayed until you reach age 65. In the meantime, you pay for the health care of others.
The sad part of this is that America defected from her constitutional roots many years ago. There was a time when in the eyes of the Christian citizen, that the duties of the civil magistrate were limited by the law of God. A legitimate civil magistrate was responsible under biblical law to protect our national borders, fight just wars, enforce contracts, protect life, and guarantee the just weight and measures of money. The civil magistrate had no biblical mandate to be in the arenas of either health care or education.
The modern conservative is hardly able to frame the right questions about such issues like Obamacare. Also, Christians have been kept in the dark for lack of good teaching.
In essence the Constitution today is null and void. The only answer to the modern political debate on health care is a return to biblical law.
Conservative politicians, and even the Church, are unable to apply biblical law to the political issues of the day. We still seem to believe that the separation of Church and State voids the application of biblical law in the public square.
The modern church is confused. In most churches, when the law died as valid in the Christian life, it also died as valid in the public life. It should not be surprising that many churches support Obamacare and the confiscation of wealth for redistribution. The State has become their partners in the ministry of mercy. Other churches are silent and have nothing to say except a few prayers on Sunday Morning for the civil magistrate. The sermons that most preachers preach are what I call ‘safe’. They deal with the legitimate and orthodox issues of the heart, but they never cross the boundaries into the realm of the duties and limitations of the civil magistrate. Most evangelical preachers never call the civil magistrate to obey the law of God.
After a century of domination by the public schools, public universities, and ‘safe’ sermons, it should be no surprise that Obamacare has now been declared as constitutional.
